Spartans move up in polls

Michigan State moved up a spot in both this week’s Associated Press and coaches polls.

The Spartans (18-4, 6-2 Big Ten) moved from 13 to 12 in the AP poll and from 9 to 8 in the coaches poll.

Other Big Ten teams in this week’s rankings include the following:

AP – Indiana (1), Michigan (3), Ohio State (10), Minnesota (18). Wisconsin is receiving votes.
Coaches – Indiana (1), Michigan (3), Ohio State (10), Minnesota (18). Wisconsin is receiving votes.

This week the Spartans will host Minnesota on Wednesday (7 p.m., Big Ten Network) and visit Purdue on Saturday (7 p.m., Big Ten Network).

And if you missed the post from earlier, Keith Appling is the Big Ten player of the week.

MSU’s women’s basketball team is receiving the fourth-most votes of teams outside the top 25 in the AP poll. They received 19 votes – six more than Michigan – tonight’s opponent.

Today’s MSU-Michigan game will be televised on the Big Ten Network at 7:30 p.m.

Big Ten women’s teams in this week’s AP poll are the following -  Penn State (8), Purdue (13). Nebraska, MSU, Michigan and Iowa are all receiving votes.

Good news, looks like they have us as a three seed, and if we beat Michigan moving up to a 2.

Kind of perplexing to me the differences in the AP vs. coaches. Why would Ohio State be ahead of us in any poll after we beat them recently and considering that they lost to two other teams we beat (Kansas, Illinois) Why is Syracuse, a team that has lost 2 straight games ahead of us in any poll? Same with Louisville, bearing a 3-2 record in the last 5 games? The rest I can live with but those make me scratch my head in wonder.

At the end of the day I realize it doesn’t matter in early February, but MSU is really not getting much respect in the AP poll. I’m just saying…
