MSU women hoops: Spartans vs. Nebraska


Michigan State and Nebraska were the lone top seeds to survive on the second day of the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament. Here’s a look at their matchup this evening.

No. 2 seed MSU (22-8) vs. No. 3 seed Nebraska (23-6)
When: approximately 6 tonight
Where: Bankers Life Fieldhouse (Indianapolis)
Series: Tied at 2-2 (Nebraska won the last meeting 76-56 in Lincoln on Feb. 8)
Coaches:  MSU – Suzy Merchant is 363-190 in her 19th overall and 162-70 in her seventh with the Spartans. Nebraska – Connie Yori is 422-281 in her 24th season overall and 238-141 in her 12th with the Cornhuskers. Continue reading

MSU women’s hoops: Slowing during surging Goree a key for Spartans against Michigan


INDIANAPOLIS –  It was meaningless basketball in the late stages of a game toward the end of last season when Cyesha Goree got a rare chance to play.

That was just one instance of the 24 minutes total she played last season, but it was enough for Larry Arico – the husband of Michigan women’s basketball coach Kim Barnes Arico – to see that the future was bright for Goree. Continue reading

Randolph trying to help Grizzlies reach playoffs


Zach Randolph has had double-doubles in five of his last six games as he’s tried to help the Memphis Grizzlies reach the playoffs in the deep and competitive Western Conference.

Randolph was sidelined in Wednesday’s loss to Brooklyn because of the flu and that setback dropped the Grizzlies into the ninth spot in the Western Conference. At 34-26 right now, Memphis is one of two teams in the West at or above .500 that wouldn’t make the playoffs if the season ended today. Continue reading

Spartans among Big Ten tournament favorites


The Michigan State women’s basketball team has as good a shot as anyone to win this weekend’s Big Ten tournament according to an informal poll of media members covering the conference.

Of the 16 voters, MSU was picked by three to win the tournament and six to reach the championship game for a second straight season. Continue reading

MSU women’s hoops moves to No. 19 in AP poll


A share of the Big Ten championship and a five-game winning streak to end the regular season helped Michigan State jump two spots in the rankings.

The Spartan women’s basketball team is ranked a season-high No. 19 in this week’s Associated Press poll. MSU hasn’t been as high as 19 in the AP poll since the second week of the regular season. Continue reading

MSU women’s basketball Big Ten title scenarios

Former Spartan Kalin Lucas eyes late March return to the court


All Kalin Lucas can do is sit and watch for the time being.

The Iowa Energy guard and  former Michigan State standout is currently in the recovery process after breaking his thumb during a NBA D-League game against Tulsa earlier this month.

“As far as right now, I have a cast on that I’m going to have on for four weeks,” Lucas told the State Journal on Tuesday. “After that, that’s when I’m back in the gym. I’ll do rehab, and after rehab I’ll be back on the court. As far as right now there’s really not too much I can do except just keep working out on my legs and doing core and doing conditioning.” Continue reading
