MSU baseball: OF Jimmy Pickens to Reds in 15th round, C Joel Fisher to Phillies in 23rd round of MLB draft

Outfielder Jimmy Pickens was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 15th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Saturday afternoon, the first Michigan State player off the board in the last day of the three-day event.

In the 23rd round, the Philadelphia Phillies drafted senior catcher Joel Fisher with the 682nd pick of the draft. They were the only two Spartans selected in the 40-round draft.

Michigan State’s team-by-team APR scores


Wednesday marked the release of the Academic Progress Rates by the NCAA and Michigan State teams are meeting the mark.

Allyssa Ferrell mounting strong finish for nationally ranked MSU women’s golf team

EAST LANSING — Allyssa Ferrell has become a bit of a celebrity since her heroics at last month’s Big Ten championships.

In a dramatic finish that coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll described as the biggest sports moment in her coaching career, Ferrell made a nine-foot putt that lifted Michigan State to a share of the Big Ten title – its third in four years – with Ohio State. Continue reading

Sporting News put out its rankings of the the nation’s football coaches and Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio is regarded as one of the best.

Dantonio, who led the Spartans to a Big Ten championship and a victory over Stanford in the Rose Bowl last season, was tabbed by the publication as the ninth best coach in the nation. Continue reading

Former Spartans Randolph, Green shining in early stages of playoffs


Zach Randolph has played a role in a pair of overtime victories that have helped the No.7 seed Memphis Grizzlies take a 2-1 series lead over Oklahoma City, while Draymond Green’s double-double nearly helped Golden State rally to a victory Thursday.

The early stages of the playoffs have gone well for the former Michigan State standouts.

Randolph had the go-ahead basket late in overtime Monday to help the Grizzlies even the series before turning in a double-double in what turned out to be another overtime win Thursday. He’s averaging 20.7 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists through three games in the Western Conference quarterfinals.

Green’s production has increased in the postseason and he’s averaging 10.3 points and 7.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.3 blocks in three playoff games this season. Green is also shooting 47.8 percent from the field.
