Ohio State-MSU game has recruiting implications, game day notes

Big Ten season is upon us and there is a large College GameDay crowd on campus for  today’s main event. Today’s game against Ohio State is an important one for the Spartans.

It offers a chance to get off to a strong start in Big Ten play and can have an important role in MSU’s quest to get to Pasadena. It also gives the Spartans an opportunity to earn another victory over a ranked team.

But more importantly, it could have implications with recruiting and help the Spartans continue to land Ohio talent.

“To be able to have a chance to play against Ohio State with Urban Meyer and you’re recruiting against him and you’ve got a chance to be able to say ‘Hey why not come to Michigan State’ and then you can go out and try to beat him. If you do I think it makes recruiting after that a lot easier, instead if you would go out and lose the game,” ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit said Friday.

Here is a deeper look at the recruiting issue and how it will be harder for MSU to recruit top talent in the Buckeye state with Urban Meyer coaching at Ohio State.

Herbstreit also said he believes the Spartans have staying power.

And columnist Graham Couch believes Meyer’s arrival at Ohio State is good for the Big Ten.

No doubt this is a huge game for several reasons. The potential for another stellar season may be in the balance and recruiting Ohio and nationally can be influenced.

The Wiscy / Husker match-up looms large too.

    GO GREEN!

20-17 Spartans with THE Oh-How-I-Hate Ohio State Acorns trying to win it on a last ditch drive, coming up short only to kick the field goal to make it 17 and then attempting an on-sides kick that is recovered by Benny Fowler. Game over.

Huskers smash Wiscy 31 – 7 in a revenge match.

    Minny takes Ioway @ Kinnick Stadium 27 – 17.

The Cats do it to the Hoosiers in a turnover fest, but a nail biter and win 28 – 27.
