MSU women’s basketball game blog: Spartans 68 Robert Morris 35

The Michigan State women’s basketball team will try to move to to 5-0 on the season as it takes on winless Robert Morris at the Breslin Center. Stay here with updates on the game.

A little reading to get you prepared for the game. We have a story on East Lansing native Klarissa Bell, who has played a large part in the strong start to the season for the Spartans. Bell, a junior, has made an impact on both ends of the floor as she transitions from a role player to a key component. And then there also is this tipoff that has all the info for today’s matchup with the Colonials.

The starters for today are the following
ROBERT MORRIS – Jasmine Tate, Ashley Ravelli, Kelly Hartwell, Artemis, Spanou, Anna Gailite
MSU – Jasmine Thomas, Klarissa Bell, Annalise Pickrel, Courtney Schiffauer, Becca Mills

(4:03) MSU 7 Robert Morris 0: RM calls timeout after Jasmine Thomas basket. Thomas has scored 5 points and assisted on a fast-break layup by Bell

(4:05) MSU 9, Robert Morris 2: Timeout on the floor. Thomas has 7 points and played a role in each of the Spartans baskets. She is 3 of 3 from the floor and also has a rebound and an assist. The 6-foot-7 Gailite, who is from Latvia, has the Colonials only basket.

(4:13) MSU 15, Robert Morris 2: Courtney Schiffauer just made 2 of 2 free throws to extend MSU’s lead. Highly regarded freshman Branndais Agee also has just checked in for the first time in her career.

(4:18) MSU 15, Robert Morris 5: We’re at the media timeout with 11:34 remaining in 1st half. The Colonials only have one field goal – the basket by Gailite at the 16:28 mark. Their only other points have came on three free throws by Lou Mataly, who was fouled by Agee while shooting a 3.

(4:27) MSU 19, Robert Morris 7: Jasmine Thomas has 9 points for the Spartans at the media timeout with 7:34 left. MSU is 6 of 13 from the field and Robert Morris is 1 of 13

(4:33) MSU 24, Robert Morris 12 – After going 10 minutes without a field goal, RM has made its last two shots from the field. Ravelli hit a 3 and Spanou had a bucket in the paint.

(4:35) MSU 26, Robert Morris 12 – We’re at the final media timeout in the 1st half with 3:32 remaining. Pickrel has scored five of MSU’s last seven points.

(4:45) MSU 30, Robert Morris 12: Its halftime and the Spartans are up 18. Robert Morris is just 3-22 from the floor (13.6 percent), while MSU is 10-22 (45.5 percent). Thomas has 9 points on 4 of 4 shooting and also three rebounds and three assists. Pickrel, Mills and Jasmine Hines each have 5 points for the Spartans. Spanou, Robert Morris’ leading scorer with an average of 18.5 points, has 4 points on 1 of 6 shooting and just 2 rebounds. She entered today as the 11th leading rebounder in the nation, averaging 12.8 per game.

(5:04) MSU 34, Robert Morris 14:  MSU get its lead up to 20 for the first time today after a jumper by Bell.

(5:07) MSU 39, Robert Morris 14: After Spanou had a basket to open the scoring, MSU has scored nine straight. Schiffauer has scored four of those points, while Pickrel got a friendly bounce on a 3 that forced the Colonials to call timeout.

(5:15) MSU 43, Robert Morris 18: Schiffauer was the first Spartan to reach double digits in points today with eight so far in the scond half as MSU is well in control with 13:29 left.

(5:19) MSU 50, Robert Morris 20: The lead is now at 30 at the media timeout with 11:35 remaining. Thomas and Pickrel each have 11 points and Schiffauer has scored a season-high 10 for MSU.

(5:24) MSU 55, Robert Morris 23: Bell is 6 of 6 from floor and has 14 points for Spartans. Also has eight assists and four rebounds

(5:32) MSU 62, Robert Morris 30: RM calls timeout. MSU has gone to its bench with just two starters in.

(5:38) – MSU 64, Robert Morris 33: We’re at the final media timeout and freshmen Mariah Harris and Cara Miller and senior Tracy Nogle are in there closing this one for the Spartans.

(5:50) MSU 68, Robert Morris 35: It’s a final from the Breslin Center as MSU improved to 5-0.
