MSU women’s basketball game blog: Spartans vs. Michigan

Follow along here as the MSU women’s basketball team goes for the regular-season series sweep of rival Michigan when the teams meet at the Crisler Center at noon (Big Ten Network).

The Spartans won their 12th straight over Michigan when the teams met 12 days ago at Breslin Center.Here’s the tipoff for today’s matchup with Michigan.
And here’s another piece about MSU faring better when Annalise Pickrel and Klarissa Bell are playing well.

11:58 – Game about to get under way. Starting lineup change for MSU with Annalise Pickrel back in and Jasmine Hines out. Other starters for Spartans are Kiana Johnson, Klarissa Bell, Jasmine Thomas and Courtney Schiffauer.
11:59 – Michigan starters are Nicole Elmblad, Nya Jordan, Kate Thompson, Rachel Sheffer and Jenny Ryan.
12:02 – Teams trade turnovers on opening possessions
12:03 – Michigan with three turnovers to start, MSU with two.
12:04 – MSU 2, Michigan 2. Thompson hits shot in lane and then Thomas hits jumper
12:08 – Michigan 7, MSU 4: Wolverines come out in a zone and Spartans are 2-5 from floor early as we’re at media timeout at 15:09 mark. Thompson with 5 points for U-M on 2-2 shooting.
12:11 – Michigan 10, MSU 6 – Thompson with a 3 from literally Detroit as shot clock is about to expire (was just inside half court line). She’s 3-3 from field with 8 points.
12:16 – Michigan 17, MSU 8 – Thompson is hitting everything and she has 11 points on 4-4 shooting with three 3s. Michigan is 6-8 from field as a team. Schiffauer and Becca Mills each with 4 points for MSU.
12:21 – Michigan 19, MSU 14 – Wolverines call timeout after a 3 by Pickrel. 9:15 left in 1st half.
12:22 – Michigan 19, MSU 16 – Thomas hits 2-2 free throws at 8:45 mark
12:23 – Michigan 19, MSU 18 – Thompson finally misses and Mills gets inside bucket on the other end
12:27 – MSU 22, Michigan 21 – Spartans went on an 11-0 run to pull ahead. We’re at media timeout at 6:05 mark. Both teams are shooting 50 percent. MSU is 9-18 and U-M is 8-16. Mills and Thomas with 8 points each
12:29 – MSU 22, Michigan 22 – Ryan makes 1-2 FTs to tie game at 5:36 mark.
12:31 – MSU 25, Michigan 25 – Sheffer and Bell trade 3s
12:33 – MSU 25, Michigan 25 – We’re at final media timeout of the 1st half with 3:45 left. Pickrel just picked up her second foul. Schiffauer also has two fouls for MSU. Akyah Taylor in for Pickrel
12:38 – MSU 32, Michigan 28 – Spartans call timeout with 35.3 to go in 1st half.  Mills (10) and Thomas (11) have combined for 21 here.
12:43 – MSU 32, Michigan 28 – We’re at the half and Spartans used strong finish to pull ahead. MSU is 13-27 (48.1%) and Michigan is 10-24 (41.7%). Michigan led by as much as 9 in the 1st half. Thompson missed her final 3 shots of the first half after a 3-3 for start and is tied for the game-high with 11 points. Jasmine Thomas has 11 points for MSU.
12:55  – Second half now under way.
12:57 – MSU 32, Michigan 32: Four straight points (Jordan, Elmblad buckets) tie game up
12:58 – MSU 35, Michigan 35: Johnson hit a 3 and then Sheffer answered with 3-point play at 18:18 mark to tie game at 35.
1:03 – MSU 41, Michigan 37: We’re at media timeout with 15:56. Spartans extended lead to six (biggest of game) after a mini 6-0 spurt that featured baskets by Mills, Thomas and Schiffauer. Ryan had a bucket for Michigan to end surge.
1:07 – MSU 43, Michigan 43 – Wolverines score four straight and tie game on layup by Elmblad.
1:08 – MSU 45, Michigan 45 – Bell makes jumper and then Thompson scores inside
1:10 – MSU 47, Michigan 47 – Ryan hits a basket as she’s fouled. Will be shooting a free throw after the break. Jasmine Thomas has 15 points and is one away from a season-high
1:15 – Michigan 50, MSU 47 – Sam Arnold unable to convert three-poit play at 10:39 mark but Spartans don’t corral rebound.
1:17 – Michigan 52, MSU 47 – Ryan with steal and layup
1:18 -Michigan 52, MSU 49 – Thomas gets steal and jumper to end 7-0 U-M spurt. She is up to a season-high 17
1:21 – Michigan 55, MSU 49 – Merchant calls timeout after 3 by Ryan with 8:13 left. Ryan with game-high 20 points on 7-15 shooting. She’s playing like a senior that doesn’t want to end career without a win over biggest rival
1:27 – Michigan 55, MSU 49 – Score still the same as we’re at media timeout with 7:28 remaining.
1:28 – Michigan 55, MSU 50 – Schiffauer makes 1-2 from FT line at 7:28 mark.
1:29 – Michigan 55, MSU 52 – Thomas hits driving layup to tie a careeer-high with 19 points
1:31 -Michigan 61, MSU 54 – Thompson converts three-point play
1:33 – Michigan 63, MSU 59 – Just when U-M opened up nine-point lead MSU has crept back closer. A 3 by Bell and a jumper by Thomas make it a four-point margin at media timeout with 3:15 left

    Chris and Brian, I trust you both are well. Thanks for the additional info and inputs you both provide. While I miss the Hey Joe days, I don’t miss all of the fictional trolls, that now seem to only reside on Graham’s blog.

    Routing for a Spartan win over the skunkbears today. Go Green!

    we just got homed out of that dump..can’t wait till the men get there and hightower screws us. we never got into the one and one the second half.
