MSU women’s basketball blog: Spartans vs. Northwestern

The Michigan State women’s basketball team will try to earn its 20th win when it hosts Northwestern at 7 tonight at Breslin Center.

This will be the second attempt at win No. 20 for the Spartans, who were edged on Saturday by Michigan 70-69. MSU has won 20 games nine straight seasons.

7:23 – Northwestern 16, MSU 6: Roser hits driving layup and just like that MSU faces another 10 point deficit against Northwestern in the first half. Also trailed by 10 in the first half of the last meeting between the teams in Evanston on Jan. 31
7:28 – Northwestern 16, MSU 10: Mills ends 6 minutes scoring drought by making pair of FTs at 7:21 mark. Thomas then makes fast-break layup
7:35 – Northwestern 20, MSU 18: Thomas hits 1-2 free throws at 4:21 mark and then on next possession sets up Mills for a jumper.
7:36 – Northwestern 22, MSU 18: We’re at media timeout with 3:19 remaining. Mills has 8 points to lead Spartans.  MSU now shooting 29.2% (7-24). Diamant has 8 for Northwestern.
7:39 – Northwestern 22, MSU 21: Johnson hits 3 to pull MSU within 1
7:41 – Northwestern 24, MSU 24: Thomas three-point play with 2:19 left helps MSU draw even. She and Mills have combined for 17 first-half points
7:44 – MSU 27, Northwestern 24: Mills hits 3 to give MSU first lead since opening minute.
7:46 – MSU 27, Northwestern 25: It’s halftime and MSU is in front after trailing by 10. As was the case in the Michigan game, Thomas and Mills have been the standouts early here. They’ve combined for 20 points (Mills has 11 and Thomas has 9). Diamant has 10 for Northwestern. MSU is shooting 31.3% (10-32) and Northwestern is shooting 44% (11-25).
8:02 – MSU 27, Northwestern 27 – Second half under way and begins with a basket by Lyon.
8:05 – Northwestern 29, MSU 27: Diamant hits inside bucket to put Wildcats back ahead
8:07 – Northwestern 29, MSU 27: Diamant has 12 points and just picked up her fourth foul. That’s a huge loss for Wildcats.
8:08 – Northwestern 29, MSU 27: We’re at media timeout with 15:53 left. MSU is 0-5 to start the 2nd half.
8:11 – MSU 30, Northwestern 29: Hines converts three-point play on nice layup to put Spartans back in front at 15:30 mark.
8:13 – MSU 32, Northwestern 31: Thomas misses pair of FTs at 13:51 mark.
8:16 – MSU 34, Northwestern 33: Wildcats call timeout with 12:30 left after securing loose ball after an MSU miss. Lead has changed six times here in the early portion of the second half
8:25 – MSU 37. Northwestern 33:  Pickrel was 0-8 from floor but just hit 3 for MSU
8:25 – MSU 39, Northwestern 33: Pickrel then gets rebound putback.
8:27 – MSU 42, Northwestern 35: Pickrel drains another 3 and has made three straight. 7:58 left
8:33 – MSU 45, Northwestern 35: Spartans go ahead by 10 after 3 by Johnson
8:34 – MSU 46, Northwestern 35: Thomas makes 1-2 FT at 5:57 mark.  Bell’s go-ahead bucket has sparked 14-2 spurt for Spartans
8:36 – MSU 46, Northwestern 35: Wildcats call timeout with 4:33 left.
8:41 – MSU 50, Northwestern 37: At final media timeout with 1:11 remaining, MSU is in control and on its way to its 20th win of season.
8:54 – MSU 54, Northwestern 45: It’s a final. Mills leads all scorers with 15 points.

    What is impressive is for 3 years now, she’s done it without Madison Williams (McDonald’s All American). Just think of what this team would be if she never had knee issues.

    I think that we would be talking 25 wins than and SM would be collecting rings like the mens team. Merchant is an outstanding coach and role model. I think we traded up when JM went to Duke. Womens hoops have come a long way since I worked at the IM west and their lockers were in the IM building.
