Coming off the best season in school history, Michigan State will enter this fall ranked No. 8 in the preseason USA Today Amway Coaches poll.
It marks the highest ranking for the Spartans in the USA Today preseason rankings since the national newspaper began administering the poll in 1991. MSU’s preseason No. 13 ranking in 2012 was previously the highest the Spartans have started a season in the USA Today poll.
Defending national champion Florida State is ranked No. 1 and received 56 first-place votes, while Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon and Auburn round out the top five.
Other Big Ten teams in the preseason poll include Ohio State at No. 6, Wisconsin at No. 14 and Nebraska at No. 22.
The Spartans concluded last season ranked No. 3 in the national polls after winning the Big Ten title and defeating Stanford in the Rose Bowl. MSU enters the season, which begins Aug. 29 against Jacksonville State, on a 10-game winning streak.
