The Michigan State men’s basketball team landed another player to its 2013 class.
Chicago De La Salle’s Alvin Ellis III signed a Big Ten tender and will play for the Spartans next season. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard averaged had committed to Minnesota while Tubby Smith was still coaching the Gophers. He was released from his commitment to Minnesota earlier this month.
Ellis III averaged 20 points, six rebounds and four assists as a senior while helping De La Salle to a 17-8 record. Ellis was a first team All-State selection by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.
Ellis was a high school teammate with fellow incoming recruit Gavin Schilling during his junior season.
“Alvin will be a great addition to our backcourt.” MSU coach Tom Izzo said in a released statement. “We like his offensive skill set, especially his shooting touch, hitting 40 percent from three each of the last two seasons. He’s got good length and versatility, with the ability to defend a couple different positions on the perimeter.
“Combine his great work ethic, his great family background and his commitment to academics, and I expect him to be the type of player that really develops during his time as a Spartan, enjoying the complete student-athlete experience.”
