MSU basketball: Inside 5 minutes until tipoff

MSU and Memphis get underway here at The Palace of Auburn Hills momentarily. And here is a quick primer.

MSU starters: G Keith Appling, G Gary Harris, G Branden Dawson, F Adreian Payne, C Derrick Nix

Memphis starters: G Geron Johnson, G Joe Jackson, G Adonis Thomas, F D.J. Stephens, F Shaq Goodwin

Officials: Roger Ayers, Michael Roberts, Dwayne Gladden (2 of the 3 reffed MSU’s first-round win over Valparaiso)

Here’s my overlook from Thursday. Some other key things to watch for:

* Memphis struggled with foul trouble in its first game against St. Mary’s. The Spartans can exploit that with its much quicker perimeter presence.

* Tigers struggle at the free-throw line, shooting just 66.2 percent.

* Stephens loves to block shots. Nix can’t take the ball up soft against him, regardless if he’s covering him. Pump fakes should be at a premium, as the Tigers bite on them.

* Appling vs. Jackson should be interesting. The Memphis guard said he knows what the MSU star does well and doesn’t do well from their time as teammates on USA Basketball.

AP Put on his Green Combat shoes
    And he boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Sir Charles Barkley won’t you look down over me
Yeah we got a first class ticket
But I’m as green as a boy can be

    Then were walking over Memphis
Walking with APs feet ten feet off over Stephen’s
    Walking over Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel

    Saw the ghost of Calipari
    On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through

Now NCAA security they did not see him
They just hovered ’round his tomb
But there’s a pretty little thing
    Waiting for the Petino
    Down in the Jungle Room

    Now Coack K plays piano
On Good Friday at the Indy regional
And they brought AP down to see him
And they asked him if he would
Do a little number on Duke
And he played with all his might
    And the sideline reporter said
“Tell me are you sending Duke home child?”
And AP said “Ma’am I am tonight”

Have they got what it takes to make it to the 4?
It sure is a great time of the year when the snow begins to go and
    the Green begins to shine!

“No disrespect, but we know that we are a better team than Michigan State,” the high-flying forward said after scoring three points, grabbing six rebounds and blocking four shots. “We just gave this game away.” This comment from Memphis’ D.J. Stephens had me rolling in aisle. I guess whatever you have to say to make yourself feel better after a loss is up to you, dude.

Great win and great way to finish off the first two rounds. Now on to Indianapolis and hope that the familiarity there will pay dividends!
