MSU basketball: Blue Ribbon names Adreian Payne a first-team all-American

It’s likely to be one of many preseason accolades for MSU senior Adreian Payne, but one of the bibles of college basketball has named him among the best in the game.

Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook named the Spartans center to its first-team all-American team. He’s joined by Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart, Creighton’s Doug McDermott, Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins and Louisville’s Russ Smith.

Here’s a sneak peak at the Blue Ribbon cover. The 400-page “magazine” (it’s really much more of a soft-cover book) gives detailed previews of all 345 Division I basketball teams and will be out later this fall. And for full disclosure, I wrote the previews for MSU and a few other Big Ten schools. It is available for preorder at the website http://www.blueribbonyearbookonline.com.

Is it just me, or is it strange to see a true freshman on this list? I know everyone thinks Wiggins is special, but I have a hard time naming him an All-American before he’s played a single minute of college ball. Remember when Harrison Barnes was a preseason All-American? He had a good freshman year, but he wasn’t anywhere near All-American status by the end of his freshman year

Quite an honor for someone like Payne to be that highly thought of when you consider his last year’s stats. Hope that the experts are correct in their predictions that rate both Payne and Harris to be potential all-americans. If Dawson plays like he did as a freshman (before his serious injury), this team could be one of Izzo’s best. Here’s hoping it to happen. Go Green.
