Hoops teams in action; Bell honored

The Michigan State men’s and women’s basketball teams are both in action today.

The Spartan men are expecting a tougher test than earlier in the week as they take on Loyola of Chicago at 2 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.

Columnist Graham Couch has the matchups for today’s game.

The MSU women’s team will try to continue the best start in school history today when it faces Dayton at 1 p.m. at the UD Arena. The Flyers, who are ranked No. 19 in this week’s Associated Press poll and No. 18 in the USA Today coaches poll, will be the toughest test to date for the Spartans.

Becca Mills has heated up after a cold start shooting to the season for MSU. She will be the Spartans’ primary inside presence for today’s game with Jasmine Hines not making the trip.

On the football front, junior Le’Veon Bell was named the College Football Performance Awards Elite Running Back Trophy winner (national running back of year). He is the third straight Big Ten running back to earn the honor, following Wisconsin’s Montee Ball (2011) and current Detroit Lion and former Illinois standout Mikel Leshoure (2010). Bell will be presented the award today.

In news from last night, the MSU volleyball team had its season come to a halt with a loss to Michigan in the regional semifinal. The MSU hockey team found some offense but it wasn’t enough in a 3-2 setback to Notre Dame.

I have a fond memory of Loyola. In 2001 my wife and I lived in the Chicago suburbs. We went downtown to the Alumni Bar for a pre game pep rally. Sparty was there and that picture was the one I used to have on the type pad on Hey Joe. We caravan to the game with about 100 alumni. The game was in a high school like gym . Everyone was close , we were two or three rows above Lupe Izzo. Loyola had a quick fast team and it took us 30 minutes to pull away. After the game AndreHutson stood around talking to us for a good ten minutes, Tom Izzo signed my program , small crowd.
I think today we are looking for forty minutes of basketball , Izzo needs to set the rotation and he does not need a wasted half.

Graham Couch disagrees with Coach Izzo and says that Izzo oversold Loyola. However Loyola runs good sets
My prediction MSU 64 Loyola 57 a tough physical game like St. Louis
for 30 minutes. Loyola is St Louis lite imho.

Just shows what a fool Cracker truly is, only a narcissistic tool would pick that particular bone. The bottom line is SO What?

Too bad btn couldn’t get off their collective programing hands and at least stream the Women’s Game. But then, when you have a Cracker supporter running the show, what would you suspect? (a bent 5 iron)

Paris Hilton when the game is tight, goes 1v1. Everyone thinks they have to make the shot that counts. Same problem they had last year, NO change.

HONORING MAJERUS: MSU had a moment of silence before the game for Rick Majerus, the longtime college basketball coach who died one week earlier of heart disease at age 64.

Loyola coach Porter Moser was an assistant for Majerus at Saint Louis.

“What a classy organization, program, Michigan State is,” Moser said after the game. “I want to thank them for doing it. Just, class all over the place.”
