Friday’s potpourri: What to watch for, John Smoltz, James Jackson

It’s a busy weekend around East Lansing. ESPN’s College GameDay is less than 24 hours away from kicking off the MSU-Ohio State festivities. Today, MSU’s swim team is holding an outdoor meet at 5 p.m. at IM West. And here are a ton of links to get you geared up for the start of Big Ten football season.

First, I take a look at the five things to watch for when the Spartans and Buckeyes kick off at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (ABC). Not-so-surprisingly, MSU’s receivers catching the ball is one of them. We’ll have our predictions and matchups in tomorrow’s edition of the LSJ and online overnight at GreenAndWhite.com. And here’s a video preview from Brian and Graham to whet your appetite.

One person who is bummed out to be missing the experience is former Atlanta Braves star John Smoltz, who grew up in Lansing and came a day away from pitching for the Spartans before signing with the Detroit Tigers out of Waverly High.

Speaking of area high school stars, James Jackson could have been on the sideline Saturday and playing for Ohio State. Instead, the former Grand Ledge wide receiver transferred after two years in Columbus and has started to blossom in his second season at Division II Wayne State – and one of his coaches thinks NFL teams should be watching for the speedster.

Also on campus today, MSU’s field hockey team hosts Indiana at 3 p.m. at Ralph Young Stadium, and the women’s soccer team hosts Nebraska at 4 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. There’s also a soccer doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, with the women hosting Iowa at 1 p.m., followed by the Spartan men against Northwestern at 3:30. Big Ten Network will televise both of those games.

Here’s the details for GameDay’s broadcast – gates open at 7 a.m. Saturday, on the north side of Beaumont Tower near the MSU Unioin. We’ll have some troops embedded in the festivities over there bringing you updates on Twitter and LSJ.com. The Spartan hockey will hold its Meet The Spartans event on Tuesday at Munn Arena. The women’s basketball TV schedule came out today.

Check back here for more before kickoff tomorrow.

89 chem, rushes the stage and snatches the Brutus head from Corso as he is about to put it on , left with no alternative Corso puts the Spartan hat on as 89 gallaps across Grand River Ave with Brutus in one hand and a cold beer in the other.

Spartans, this clown is the best you got , what is your profession? Are there not any mature Spartans out there among you to watch the game with me tomorrow.

Just for your ears because you manned up and came here as yourself, GD gets the biggest kick out of throwing newbies to this old wolf for breakfast. He was one of the first to be digested with a nice chianti.

Yeh, I did and I did it for a reason, because it’s the truth – something of which I’m not so sure you are acquainted, working where you do. Remember what I said on the previous thread about the Spartans D and containing players who normally beat up DII level talent.

After reviewing and breaking down the film, position by position I am concerned about OSU.
It is appalling how many glaring and fundamental physical mismatches I saw . I have always been a big supporter of Coach Dantonio, but I am now starting to question whether MSU can stay with this team?

Nice T-shirt for the press, glad to see you are not just a snappy dresser for the TV cameras. NOT! Is Al Bundy your fashion guru? Well we all know what Charles Smith did to him.

Desmond come to town baby !!!

Rider cup go on baby !!!

Coach D get short with media baby !!!

The Tanner have inside scoop baby !!!

  4. avatar Breadtruck86 says:

Sorry to say this, folks, but I hope I’m wrong.

    OSU 24
    MSU 13

Offensive troubles continues for MSU and our defense gets worn down. I really hope I’m wrong. So far, our team looks like it has all the chemistry of Izzo’s from two years ago….

    • avatar USMCSpartan(Ret.) says:

Little disappointed BT, The D holds them in check and their D will be the salve for the receivers – they’ve been giving up almost 400 yards to DII level talented teams.

      • avatar Spartan 81 says:

You know we all have that in the back of our mind, tomorrow is a fork in the road. Breadtruck is a great fan, saying what is in his head, Now we know that Dantonio is considering every adjustment possible behind closed doors, I will throw in the towel when we get our third big ten loss and not before. So lets see what new chapters Coach has added to the book .

    • avatar Ben Green says:

Not so fast, Breadtruck. OSU is not all that. Spartan receivers can catch the ball. You just watch. The passing game will be diversified and successful enough that the Buck’s D can’t just stack the run. And the Spartan D IS all that.

    • avatar GoSt8Go says:

I don’t see the Spartans complying with that outcome. We know how to play this type of QB. OSU doesn’t have it in them to put up those points on the Spartan defense, on the road. We only have upside: Spartans 16-9

      • avatar Spartan in Los Angeles says:

Watching the game in Vegas today, I like that score 0f 16-9. Spartans lets make it happen today. Jim Jackson would look good in Green and White.

This has been on my mind for a couple of days so bear with me. The Couch fellow is a complete mistake. It’s like he was just dropped in here without any feel for the history and culture that is MSU, it’s embarrassing to read him. I gave the dude a chance but as of three days ago I decided he wasn’t worth my time, which is sad, because I’m an MSU grad and East Lansing resident.

    Go Green!

    • avatar Spartan 81 says:

Welll hatrack I am with you , but Couch not Solari is the on the road beatwriter per Stephanie , Angel so it is Couch or the Free Press and my office server blocks the facebook comments on the Freep so I am stuck unless Couch gets hit by a bus and Solari gets the gig.

Here’s the latest load of crude from Grahm Cracker that yet again shows how little he knows about BCS football. His column today says that the Criminal Recruiter is good for the B1G. Hog wash! The program in CMB became a cesspool the moment he walked on campus. What the national media NEVER got was that he left Gainsville right before the axe fell (all that illness stuff was further smoke screen) and he left the cupboard as bear JLS. The Administration was sick and tired of the arrests and coverups and lack of academic progress. The joke in the local papers was don’t worry about getting a job if you have a son who gets recruited by Urban, you’ll be fine for the next 5 years (unless he finds somebody else he likes better to give the scholarship – and income – to in subsequent years) You think Miami has donors hanging around problem? They infest Gainsville.

Heading down to the alumni club where Trophy and I saw the Michigan win last year for good luck, going to pat the giant inflatable Sparty.

    MSU 16
    OSU 13

  8. avatar USMCSpartan(Ret.) says:

Has anyone been down to the Lake Michigan shore and seen ALL the water that is no longer there? It’s dwon 4′ since 9/1. Where did it go?

  9. avatar Ben Green says:

Speaking of large things…HUGE game today. To a large degree it will determine what kind of season the Spartans will have. Just hang on to the ball and good things will happen!
