Mark Dantonio is still looking to find someone to carry a heavy load at running back.
Nick Hill, Jeremy Langford and Nick Tompkins have been the three vying for carries this spring, but Dantonio is looking for other guys from the team to move in at that position in his quest to find a go-to back like Le’Veon Bell was for the Spartans last season.
“I think that goes without saying that that’s been a dominant position for us the last number of years in terms of 1,000 yard rushers and guys that have become All-Big Ten and guys that have been drafted,” Dantonio said during the Big Ten spring football teleconference this afternoon. “Obviously it’s a position of concern for us. Our guys are playing hard. We’ve gotta find a guy we can give the ball to 250 times. I don’t know that we have that yet. That’s part of who we are and we’re gonna find it.”
This comes a day after Dantonio said the scrimmage revealed his team needed to run the ball more effectively.
Joining the running back mix in the fall will be incoming freshmen R.J. Shelton, Gerald Holmes and Delton Williams and they will have a chance to emerge at that position and fill the void left with Bell’s departure.
Dantonio also said that kicker Kevin Cronin has had an excellent spring and is currently No. 1 at the position, but also mentioned incoming freshman Michael Geiger.
“He’s been very consistent,” Dantonio said. “With that being said, Michael Geiger is a young man that we recruited, a very highly thought of kicker in the country and he’ll come in and add immediate competition for that position.”
