Abdelkader gets new deal with Wings; Worthy gets first NFL sack

We’re a day away from the Notre Dame game. More information on that is below, but there’s also other news involving some former Spartans that are now in the pros.

A lockout is looming for the NHL, but former MSU hockey standout Justin Abdelkader has agreed to a new deal.

The Detroit Red Wings announced this morning that they have agreed to a four-year deal with Abdelkader.

Abdelkader had eight goals and 14 assists for the Red Wings last season. While at Munn for MSU’s pro camp last month, Abdelkader expressed how much he’s enjoyed playing for the Red Wings throughout his NHL career.

“It’s been great being from Michigan. I’ve been really fortunate and blessed to have the opportunity to play in my home state,” Abdelkader said. “I  don’t take it for granted one day. I just go out there and work hard. It’s been a lot of fun to be close to home and have a lot of support from family and friends and people from around Michigan. Obviously to play for an Original Six team and play for a team that’s been so successful for so many years it’s a dream come true.”

Week 2 of the NFL got going last night and former Spartan Jerel Worthy joined the Green Bay Packers sack party. Worthy got his first career sack – one of seven the Packers had in their 23-10 victory over the Chicago Bears. He finished with three tackles.

Now on to some Notre Dame stuff and a few links to share.

Solari recaps five things to know about Saturday’s matchup with Notre Dame. Could this game be another classic between the schools?  There have been a number of thrilling games between MSU and Notre Dame over the history of the rivalry. Do any of you have any favorite moments? The Spartans have won 10 of the last 15 meetings between the schools since a two-year hiatus in 1995-96.

Columnist Graham Couch goes inside the head of holder Mike Sadler leading into the contest with the Irish. Aaron Bates was a hero for the Spartans two years ago in their overtime win over Notre Dame and Sadler draws plays on the sideline hoping for his chance in the spotlight.

Tyler Eifert is the latest in a long line of talented tight ends at Notre Dame and could pose some mismatch problems Saturday for MSU.

Got to catch da Bears v. Pack last night. Worthy looks leaner and faster than when he was here.

Favorite moments? There are plenty, but I gotta go with Little Giants, cuz BTN showed it last night and I still found myself going a bit goofy when it happened.

Just very concerned about this game tomorrow night, if Maxwell continues to throw wobbly passes we are done for. From my seats at the Boise game I smelled fear from our Offense, the sense of impending doom was palpable in the air last night. I have very little confidence that we can handle the bright lights of the National Stage. If Maxwell starts the night off with a pick six
We are dead men walking, God help us all.

    1. Reception at my daughter’s wedding 14 years ago as people were continuously sneaking into the bar next door, coming back in and announcing th latest score and the party going crazy as MSU crushed the irish 45 – 23
2, Minus 8 Yds rushing for irish in 1965
    3. #95 gesturing to the irish to “bring It” in 1966
    4. Little Giants
Actually these are all 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d. I almost love beating ND and much as beating scUM

Speaking of favorite moments…first time down at ND and it was Coach Perles second game as coach of the Spartans…the Irish were heavy favorites and looked like they were gonna take us…but in the 4th quarter, Carl Butler took a handoff and went around the left side and found nothing but daylight as he ran down the sideline and waltzed into the end zone! We went nuts! The defense held the rest of the way and we left South Bend with the signature win of the season. Beautiful memory, that one.

I will probably never see another MSU v. ND game live. The only two times I have been at this game (2004 & 2009) we have lost. I will have to be content watching this from home and hopefully celebrating another MSU victory much to the disappointment of my ND loving in-laws.

Friday Prediction – MSU Defense will play their best game of the year and will not allow nd to score a TD. Look for 2 picks late in the game to end nd drives as they struggle to play catch up. MSU offensive line will also play their best game of the year. Burkland coming back from injury will be a big help. This will be LeVeon’s last game against nd (still predicting nfl next year) and he wants to go out huge, 30 carries for 180 yds and 2 td’s. AMax is getting loosened up and with nd’s defense focusing on Bell he will be able to throw, 18 – 25 for 200yds and 2 td’s. MSU 31 – nd 6. GO GREEN!!!!

  7. avatar NJ Rob says:

Top 2 rivalry game for MSU for sure, after UM. Let’s hope they keep scheduling us.

  8. avatar NJ Rob says:

28-20 MSU. Hoping Bell runs wild and “eats”…

Should be a classic under the lights. Can’t wait to go. First game this season.

I hated when Abdelkader left early but love it that he’s with the Wings. He’s fortunate to be playing so close to home for an excellent franchise.

Good to see Worthy doing well for the Pack.

On paper the Spartans should handle ND easily. Hopefully that will be the case, but many of these big match-ups end up closer than expected.

Before the Battle of Agincourt, victory looks uncertain, and the young king’s heroic character emerges in his decision to wander around the English camp at night, in disguise, so as to comfort his soldiers and determine what they really think of him. He agonizes about the moral burden of being king, noting that a king is only a man. Before the battle, Henry rallies his troops with the famous St. Crispin’s Day Speech, referring to “we few, we happy few, we band of brothers”.

I met S81 before the BSU game and referred to someone as Henry the Fifthing. (Later, he asked what I meant; your explanation is much better than mine was.)

At the time I used the phrase, The Marine overheard me. He just smiled.

Don’t you have a sunset to watch or something :)

I think Notre Dame RG Mike Golic Jr. is the ESPN personality’s son. Given the poor game he had against Purdue’s Kawaan Short, is it right for Senior to put a little more implicit pressure on his son with such a highly publicized wager?

Yes, I took some heat from that, I have to answer to a higher power. Good Luck tonight

@Espngreeny DO NOT TOUCH THAT GAME

As for Eifert, here’s a compelling case–with lots of pictures!–that he isn’t a tight end:
