Spartans better in the final minutes again, this time for huge win over Badgers

MADISON, Wis. — Michigan State might not be a perfect team, but certain themes are developing. Most importantly, the Spartans are almost always the better team in the final minutes.

They were down the stretch again Tuesday, winning at Wisconsin’s Kohl Center for the second year in a row and just the second time since 2001.

Keith Appling and Branden Dawson were terrific. Appling finished with 19 points, Dawson with career highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds.

MSU is 17-3, 6-1 in the Big Ten and, regardless of its inconsistencies, is showing itself to be a major player in the Big Ten race.

Izzo at the podium. More here later.

6-1, 3 road victories, first place, it’s all coming together !

Graham, what do you think? I believe the floor for MSU in the conference is 12-6 fourth place and the ceiling is 15-3 with a conference title possibly shared with Indiana or UM. I think it will take 14 or 15 wins to take the title. This team is beginning to resemble the 08-09 team in terms of their conference start. Would be very happy with a similar season. Given Nix is the only loss, next year should be very interesting.

14-4 seems most probable which could very easily get a share of the title Graham. This win was like a game and a half because now we have 3 of the 5 formula road wins with trips to Nebraska and Purdue. In my opinion we are playing with house money Sunday for this reason. We can win that game if we dial in like Kansas, tonights effort would be insufficient but worst case scenario is we make the turn for the back nine at 7-2 on pace for to be right there for a piece.

Sparty is certainly winning the close ones and is playing it’s best in the last 2-3 minutes of games. But I worry about the lack of depth and the minimal contribution of the freshman. And what about Trice’s health?

After the first 5 minutes, this was a good game to watch and the refs pretty much didn’t insert themselves into the mix.

A really big road win and it sure was good to see App take control when it was needed, which in the second half was pretty often.

Sadly, Byrd had a horrible minute in the game and damn near changed the entire mojo in that stretch. Coach Iz gave him the hook right away and put Dawson back in despite foul trouble. Great game for BJ. – career high pts and tied for career rebounds.

Bo’s guys seemed to be in love with the 3 ball. Absolutely no inside presence to speak of and they didn’t shoot well from the charity stripe either. What’s crazier, they didn’t try to take very many charges.

    Go Green !!!
