IOWA CITY — The joke is that it took only four hours to drive from Lansing to Iowa City because Kathy Valentine was driving.
This isn’t an ordinary Michigan State road game for the mother of MSU freshman Denzel Valentine, or the friends and family who made the trek with Kathy to watch Denzel face his close friend and former Sexton teammate, Iowa freshman Anthony “Sapp” Clemmons.”
Kathy Valentine, longtime friend Marques Davis, Sexton JV football coach Hundley Campbell and former Sexton athletic director Sharon Landon made the trip (which is supposed to take seven hours) together on Thursday.
“It’s great to watch them play,” said Davis, a 2008 Sexton grad. “I’ve been watching them their whole lives. To watch them (out here) is going to be exciting. These are my little brothers. It shows what hard work does. They weren’t the most talented kids. But look where it got them.”
Davis and Valentine are sitting right behind the MSU bench. Hundley and Landon are in the Iowa section, on the opposite corner.
“I told Sapp, we want to support him and Denzel,” said Hundley, who stays in touch with both several times a week. I’m just proud of them.”
